History: The tragic tale of England and Ireland’s Nine Days' Queen... Lady Jane Grey never wanted to be queen. In the end, she paid the price with her life. Lady Jane Grey is remembered in British history as the first reigning Queen, as well as the monarch with the shortest reign.

More than 450 years ago, Lady Jane Grey was beautiful and intelligent, and had been raised to marry King Edward VI. However, the young king contracted tuberculosis of which he died two months later on July 6, 1553. Due to unscrupulous political planning and manipulation before his death, King Edward had changed his will to discredit his two half sisters, Mary & Elizabeth, attempting to prevent either of them from ruling England due to religious conflicts. Instead, unbeknown to her, King Edward had named his cousin, Jane Grey, as his successor. Upon learning that she had inheristed the royal crown, Jane abruptly cried, even fainting at the news. She was only 15 or 16 years old at the time.

After only nine days as the first reigning Queen, Jane was overthrown by the more popular, half sister of King Edward, Mary Tudor, who would later be known as the infamous Bloody Mary. Mary I claimed the thrown, and promptly had Jane arrested & charged with treason, imprisoning her within the Tower of London. The crime for which Lady Jane was convicted was punishable by death. She was beheaded on February 12, 1554.

1 large teaspoon (or 2.5 grams) per 8oz cup of less than boiled water, preferably 200F or less. Steep covered for 3 - 5 minutes.

Brewing Tip: As with all black tea, steeping for longer times and at higher temperatures, will only activate more tannins increasing astringency and bitterness. Instead, use more tea for a stronger, bolder brew, or use less tea at lower temps for a softer, more mild flavor.
